Northeast Woodlands

The Northeast Woodlands is the large region from Maine in the north, to Maryland in the south, to Illinois in the west. This area was completely surrounded by forests and woodlands. The indians of the Northeast Woodlands usually lived in Wigwams, huts made of sticks and mud. They were mostly nomads, often moving around to follow wild game. The women planted and farmed while the men hunted and fished. The most popular weapons for hunting were the atlatl and the bow and arrow. The well known tribes of the Northeast Woodlands were the Abenaki, Mohawk, Seneca, Massachuset, Penobscot, Narragansett, Wappinger, Pequot, Montauk, Delaware (Lenape), Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mahican, Tuscarora, Chippewa, Ottawa, Menominee, Potawatomi, Sauk, Fox, Kickapoo, Illinois, Miami, Shawnee, Powhatan, and Susquehannock.
